Every year, over 300,000 tonnes of clothing is either sent to landfill or exported from Australia.
Australians are buying an average of 14.8kg of clothing each year - around 56 items, making us the highest consumers of textiles per capita globally. We also bin around 10kg of our clothes each year.
(Sources: Australia Institute 2024, The Guardian 2022)
our fashion habits are wreaking havoc on the environment.
The average cotton t-shirt uses 2,700 litres of water and 6.75kg of CO2 in it’s growing and manufacturing process. By using recycled textiles, we’re saving our planets precious resources, and saving polyester textiles from rotting in landfill and creating harmful greenhouse gases.
What happens to my clothes and textiles?
We have multiple streams to ensure clothes and textiles that are sent to us stay out of landfill!
Wearable items are sent to Bloom Op Shop - our social enterprise op shop pledging any profit made quarterly to local orgs and charities. They send us their unwearables in return!
Unwearable items are categorised, and either purchased by local artists and designers to be repurposed or recycled into new products by our skilled workers and sewists!
Eligible unwearable shoes are sent to Tread Lightly to be repurposed into new products.
Wearable baby clothing and shoes is sent to Baby Give Back!

If you recycle over 500g of eligible clothing, accessories and textiles, you receive a $10 voucher to spend either on our website or at our social enterprise Bloom Op Shop! T’s and C’s apply:
One voucher is redeemable per customer per calendar month. You are required to provide your first and last name and email address to create a customer account through our website to redeem a voucher either in-store or online.Your clothing parcel/bag must contain minimum of 6 eligible items, or in the case of fabric scraps/textile recycling only, must weigh a minimum of 500 grams as per fab.LOOP textile guidelines. If you are bringing both clothing and textile recycling, you only need to satisfy the criteria for one category, however you will only receive one voucher - eg. You have brought in 10 items of clothing, but only 200 grams of fabric scraps. The clothing category is eligible, therefore your textile recycling can also be accepted.
Voucher must be used in a purchase with minimum product $20 value (shipping excluded), and cannot be used on conjunction with any other offers/sales.
Vouchers will only be issued online or in-store upon inspection of your parcel/bag to confirm it meets the above terms and conditions. This will occur when a staff member has verified the contents of your bag either in-store or online.
Bloom Op Shop and fabLOOP Textiles reserves the right to reject parcels and void vouchers if items are unhygienic/biohazardous, or more than 10% of the total contents is not on the accepted list. In the case that a rejected parcel has been mailed-in, the parcel will be returned to you at your cost.
Vouchers are not redeemable for cash, and are not replaceable.
If you do not meet the criteria for minimum numbers or weights, you do not qualify for a voucher.
Bloom Op Shop and fab.LOOP textiles are not responsible for items lost through Australia Post.
Items dumped at our premises outside of opening hours are deemed ineligible.

We love damaged clothes! We accept anything you can wear, in any condition, as long as it is sanitary! That includes rips, stains (cannot be bodily fluids), marks, holes, sewing projects gone wrong etc!
-
Absolutely! Our social enterprise Bloom Op Shop accepts both clothing and textile recycling, and you can grab your voucher in person too!

Currently we are using manual methods to recycle textiles we receive, as we are a bootstrapped business, and machinery is very expensive! Our dream is to one day have machinery that will break down clothes into fibres and thread them back into fabric, but we’re working step by step to that dream! Our current goal is to buy a fibre shredder and opener to create fluffy ‘shoddy’ fibre to use in our recycled products!
